Summer Fun

:::sigh:::

I had started a post yesterday but didn’t save it before I finished it and now its gone 😦

Oh well.

We’ve been busy the past few days.  I’ve been trying to do things with the boys since summer, like it or not, is winding down 😦 I’ve always hated the time right after my birthday, summer has always seemed to fly by.  It especially does now because it seems like my kids go back to school earlier and earlier every year.

I’m not ready.

I’m already having not fun drama begin with my oldest and he’s only 10 (going on 15). I never really realized how little control I have over the choices they make, I mean I know that but its a scary feeling.

This is a little of what we’ve been up to….

Football camp has begun! Summer officially over.

Mmm…my new favorite, a snowball.

Tennis anyone?

They are out of order but here is a rundown.  My youngest son has decided to do football camp this year, its just a week long camp, in the evenings.  Its fun, my oldest has done it for the past 4 years though he isn’t this year.   My youngest wants to play football again this year but I don’t know if we’ll have the time.

Next up, a snowball.  I had been hearing everyone talk about ‘snowballs’ on fb.  I thought it was just a snow cone/slushie.  It is but its not.  We stopped at a place on Friday night.  Super good.  A million different wacky flavors.  Its flavored ice mixed with ice cream plus you can also get toppings like marshmallow on it.

I have been telling my boys for months we would get tennis rackets and go play at the park.  I haven’t played since high school, now I use that term loosely.  I was never on a team but I’d go hit some balls with my sister in law who was on the team.  The boys and I went on Thursday then we took their dad on Saturday.  So much fun!  I’m still sore from playing.  I think we will make it a common occurrence 🙂

Finally, peaches!  We have this sad, sorry looking peach tree at work.  It grew from someone just throwing a peach pit out, its now half knocked down but is COVERED with peaches this year.  This bag hardly put a dent it the bounty of fruit on the tree.

Cole, my youngest, did have a lot of hockey this weekend.  He said goodbye to his hockey coaches who are joining Disney on Ice this year in the Frozen tour.  It was sad but we are so incredibly happy for them.  We can’t wait to see the show!

That’s about it.  Not much knitting got done.  Some did.  But not as much as I needed to get done.  I will end this with a progress pic of my Vortex shawl.  I added a larger cable and its already getting too big, so I can’t get a very good shot of it.

Its coming along wonderfully.  These pictures don’t really show the colors well.  I am a little bummed, I have been just tossing the next two mini skeins in my bag and taking them with me. I dug it all out last night at football and realized I am missing one of my next colors.  Its not a HUGE deal but I know I’ll find it as soon as I’m too far past that color to add it back.

So that’s what’s been going on here.  Hopefully I’ll get more done now that sports practices are underway 🙂

Happy Birthday to Me

This past Monday was my 35th birthday.  It was an uneventful day, we don’t really do a whole lot for birthday’s around here.  I was actually a little bummed about turning 35.  I know 35 isn’t old but I don’t feel like I should be that old.  I don’t feel like a teenager or anything, nor would I WANT to be a teenager again.

I guess I just thought I’d feel more like a grown up at 35 than I actually do.  I mean I’m a grown up.  I’m married, I have kids, I go to work and I have a mortgage.  I don’t even really know what I want to be yet when I grow up.  I don’t think I have a whole lot more time to figure that out :/

The other thing that bums me out about my birthday being over is it seems like the last part of summer flies by.  I’m not ready for summer to be over and my boys to be back in school.  😦  I like the semi-lazy days of summer.  I like my boys being home, though they have been fighting more the past few days and getting into trouble. But I still like them being here 😉

Ok, enough of my bummed out pity posting…..

This is my lovely yarn cabinet, my happy place when I’m having a bad day.  Maybe I should go visit it now 🙂

How Do I Knit All the Things?

My youngest son has been bugging me to knit him a ‘jacket’. I have been scouring Ravelry and last night I dug out every single pattern book & knitting magazine that I have. I couldn’t find anything.

Except for one.

Its from the new BT Kids pattern book, the Arlo pattern.  I absolutely love it.  I spent the evening going through my yarn and I believe I found something that will work.

It is 770 yards of KnitPicks Wool of the Andes in Sapphire Heather.  I love it.  The picture doesn’t do the color justice.

KnitPicks Wool of the Andes

I refrained from buying the pattern last night and casting on right away.  I have too much started right now that I need to get finished or rip out.  The needles I need for this project are currently on other projects.

Writing that made me realize I have three sets of interchangeable needles, I guess I really do have a lot of projects started….

I honestly can’t even think of what or where they all are.

Hmmm….

Magic Knot

One of my problems while working on my Vortex shawl using the gradient kit was joining all of those mini skeins. Normally I’m a fan of the ‘spit join’ but my kit is superwash.

Then my friend shared this video with me.

I was a little doubtful at first but once I actually tried it and knitted with the section with the knot, it really is unnoticeable.  How have I not known about this before?!

Blog Hop!

So, I have been nominated by Butterfly Sparkle to participate in a blog hop about creative processes.   I’m going to try my best to answer these questions, they seem to be more aimed at someone who designs patterns.  Maybe not.  We’ll see…

1. What am I working on?

Right now I’m still plugging away on my Vortex Shawl and the Creeper blanket.  I haven’t been doing much on either at the moment.  Though I’ve been working more on the creeper blanket, its so easy and working with the worsted weight yarn is a nice change.  I forgot how much quicker knitting can go with thicker yarn.  My yarn of choice is usually fingering weight because as we all know, sock yarn doesn’t count as stash 😉

2.  How does my work differ from others of its genre?

This question stumps me, I feel this is one of the questions aimed more at designing.  I used to not think I’d EVER want to try designing but lately the idea has been popping up more & more.  Not right now though, someday possibly.

3.  Why do I write/create what I do?

Again, I feel this is aimed more at designing but I’m going to answer it pertaining to what I choose to knit.  Honestly I knit what I like, I couldn’t ever knit something I hate to work on.  I’ve had projects like that and they are either shoved somewhere in my house that I’ve forgotten about or most likely frogged.  I’ve decided life is too short to knit with crappy yarn and work on something I absolutely hate.

4.  How does my writing/creating process work?

Usually a yarn that I have buried deep in my stash with all of a sudden pop into my head and I’ll think “ohhh I forgot about that yarn, I want to use it NOW.”  If there wasn’t a project in mind for that yarn or sometimes even if there was, I’ll search Ravelry until I find whatever that yarn wants to be.  Sometimes it works the other way around and I’ll find the pattern first and then have to stash dive.

This was fun!  Now I’d like to nominate three people to talk about their creative process.

Reading and Knitting

Along with all of this knitting I’m doing I’ve been bitten by the reading bug again. I have gone through a pretty long spell of not really reading anything to currently reading 4 books at once. Wow, I just counted in my head, yeah it really is 4.

In my defense, there was a huge book sale sponsored by the local hospital held at the ice rink last week. It was HUGE. I had seen it there the past few years and never bothered to check it out. It is going to be a yearly thing for me now. Just imagine a whole ice rink (melted obviously) filled with tables which are then filled with books. With boxes of books under the tables waiting to replenish what is purchased. I was in heaven, I wish now I had gotten a picture.  I had gone in with the intention to round out some of my Stephen King collection I could have bought so much more….

WIP Wednesday

I’m currently having a little trouble concentrating on one project.   As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I started picking up the yarn I’m going to use to make my oldest the Minecraft blanket for Christmas.  I was going to go to Michaels and buy the brand of yarn that the pattern calls for but I was too impatient and I wanted to get started on it now.

I know how I am, its barely July, so I’ll keep telling myself “oh, I have plenty of time!” then it will be Dec. 24 at 12am and I’ll be feverishly still knitting squares, still needing to sew them all together before day break.

Here’s what I got instead.

I think I did pretty good matching up the colors compared with the Loops & Thread brand yarn originally used. I did buy one shade wrong that I need to return, it should be a darker green but its way too light.  I actually found pattern notes on Ravelry that substituted RHSS and has a list of the colors they used.  It has been super helpful.

I haven’t added much  to my Vortex Shawl since I last posted, I’ve been working on it but not as much.  It has become my project to work on while I’m waiting at the ice rink for my youngest son to finish up with hockey practice/lessons.  It’s a great project because I don’t have to look at what I’m doing and I’m not carrying around huge skeins of yarn like I do for the blanket.

Hopefully by next Wednesday I’ll have many more squares to show you and more of the Vortex completed 🙂

Going Swimming

This week has been a lazy week so far for us.  The place where I work closes down this week for vacation.  This year we have no plans so   we’ve been kind of just hanging out.  I had intentions of cleaning my house but then I felt guilty not doing something with my kids.  So yesterday and today we spent time at my parents pool.

I also had big plans of doing tons of knitting during vacation however that has not happened either.  Though I did pick up some Red Heart to start the Minecraft blanket.  Its been a long time since I’ve used good old RHSS, the last time I used it, it was pretty rough and scratchy.  Surprisingly these couple skeins I got don’t seem awful.  Hopefully something has changed with RHSS, it was what I had originally used back when I first started crocheting and while its not my favorite yarn, there’s something to be said for only paying $2.88 for a big skein of it, especially when I’m making something for my kids 🙂

FO Friday

While this is technically a FO, I didn’t recently finish it but its the most recent FO I have to post about.

It is probably one of my favorite knits so far, I can see myself using this pattern many more times, it is Elfe.

Elfe

I used stash yarn, the light blue is from The Sanguine Gryphon Bugga! and the dark blue is Beaches from Creatively Dyed.  I had two hanks of each color and only used I full of the Bugga and a small part of the second.  The Beaches didn’t even use a full hank.

My only problem with it is I didn’t join the colors the right way, I thought I was but all down the back the stripes are a little funky.  I still have to finish weaving in some of the ends, hopefully I can get it to not look so bad.  I finished it  a few days before I went to Maryland Sheep & Wool and I was trying to weave them in on my way down to the festival.  Probably not a good idea 😉
